Wilford M. Farnsworth, III (Marty) founded Excel Advisory Group in 1994. Prior to his involvement with Excel, Mr. Farnsworth’s real estate career included two decades of involvement in industrial real estate development. He was a partner with Trammell Crow Company, which he initially joined as a leasing agent in 1976. He was with that firm in Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and Denver, and as the Phoenix industrial partner, he developed and/or acquired over 3.5 million square feet of industrial facilities.
Since establishing Excel, Mr. Farnsworth has also been co-founder of MainSpring Capital Group, formerly FBR Investments, LLC, which is a closely held, Arizona-based development company focused on general purpose industrial buildings in Arizona. MainSpring and its principals have purchased or developed assets valued in excess of $100 million, ranging from a master-planned residential and golf community to office and industrial buildings and parks. Also, he is co-founder of IBC Holdings, LLC, an industrial and office developer/investor with holdings in Oklahoma, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and Oregon.
Mr. Farnsworth received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University in 1976, and an MBA from Harvard University in 1980.
Kevin M. Starr joined Excel Advisory Group in 1996 and became a principal with the firm in 2001. Prior to joining Excel, Mr. Starr’s experience included 18 years with Aetna Life and Casualty and Aetna Realty Investors (“Aetna”). Aetna built a commercial real estate investment portfolio in excess of $27 billion, including development projects, joint ventured and wholly-owned properties, commercial mortgages, and participating mortgages. Initially a banking analyst with the company, Mr. Starr became a commercial real estate investment underwriter, and progressed to the management of commercial mortgage investment for Western and Midwestern market regions, overseeing a team of professionals and transactions of approximately $750 million per year. He also held positions coordinating investor relations, developing investment vehicles and structures for the company, and oversaw the active management of problem property portfolios during the real estate down-turn of the early 1990’s. Mr. Starr has dealt with all income producing property types, has extensive knowledge and understanding of properties and markets, and extensive contacts within the industry.
Mr. Starr received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with additional studies in Spanish from Brigham Young University in 1978, and an MBA from the University of Connecticut in 1981.
Todd M. James – Project Leader with Excel Advisory Group since 1996; Principal with Excel Advisory Group since 2004; from 1991 to the present Mr. James has provided independent consulting services through James & Associates to a variety of clients including Goldman Sachs, J.E. Robert Companies, Lehman Brothers, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrett, and Morgan Stanley; from 1984 to 1991 with financial institutions as loan officer/underwriter or finance/portfolio manager, including Carver Savings & Loan, N.E.D. Mortgage and North County Bank. Mr. James has an undergraduate degree from San Diego State University.
James E. Berry – Mr. Berry joined Excel in 1994 after spending eight years structuring and negotiating acquisitions, financings, sales and major leases as the Chief Operating Officer of the Los Angeles/North Office of The Shidler Group. Prior to that, he was the Financial Manager of the Los Angeles office of Trammell Crow Company. Mr. Berry was originally trained in public accounting, primarily as an auditor of real estate companies.
Starting in 1997, Mr. Berry left Excel to enjoy six years with CenterTrust, a NYSE traded Shopping Center REIT, where he closed over a billion dollars in acquisition, financing and disposition transactions as Vice President. He re-joined Excel in 2003, and became a principal in 2005.
Mr. Berry received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from the California State University at Dominguez Hills and has passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination.
